Wanted: wave forecaster
woke up at 745 am to pick up xT from the LIRR, from where we went straight to robert moses beach, droopy-eyed, donut in stomach and surfboard stuffed in my dad's rickety 200,000+ miles and still kickin corolla. living in fast-food-filled Deer Park, i sometimes forget how close i live to the Atlantic Ocean, but i was quickly reminded of my privilege once i hit the robert moses causway and got my first whiff of the misty sea. unfortunately, our search for an LI wave turned out to be utterly fruitless. after glaring at field 5's disappointing flatness, i ask a landscaping guy where the reputed Democrat's Point is. his instructions: drive out of the parking lot, take the turn around at the lighthouse, pass the watertower, and follow the road to the end where you'll come across two road block barricade, placed there to keep unwanted surfers out of the sacred fishing grounds. he looks at me, wearing boarder shorts and a quicksilver jacket and asks with a smirk, why do you want to know? i smirk back, "i'm going fishing". "have fun".
we set out on our treasure hunt, and after trecking through miles of beach and passing a caravan of RV-based fisher folk, we realize our laborious journey has left us with nothing but a couple of boogie-boarding kids. we plop down on the rocks, puzzled... apparently, our timing is off. maybe we need to come earlier in the day? maybe we have to wait till late summer hurricane season? we return home, wave-less, understanding that the next step on the staircase to surfing greatness will require us to learn wave-weather-tide patterns.
oh, btw, Feliz Dia Del Padre a todo los padres. we celebrated by pic-nic-king on the grassy-ass fields of Sunken Meadow surrounded by blaring merengue and soccer jugglers.
shit, this past week was my first FULL week of full-time work! i celebrated this accomplishment Friday night with my older cousin, Darren, and budlights. "congratulations, you have thousands more weeks like this to go".
Thanks to Carla, Jorge, Ronnie, and Omar for coming out to volunteer for CCCEH's Hike the Heights event at Highbridge Park.
